FLEA CONTROL

This review takes a close look at several very popular topical products for Flea Control. Experts say the only truly effective way to keep fleas off a dog is with a topical or oral medication.

Flea collars are generally described as ineffective, while flea shampoos provide only immediate relief by killing adult fleas on pup. They won’t prevent pup from picking up more fleas from around the home or eggs that hatch. Several vets specifically caution against using flea “dips,” which they say are harmful to pups and the environment.

This video shows how and where to spot fleas on your pup.

My research indicates that Fontline Plus and K9 Advantix are two of the leading topical products considered effective. My main internet resources are listed at the very bottom of this review along with their associated URL’s. Some of this is technical so you might want to visit these sites if technical is important to you. Here is a small extract of a study done on both of these products and their effectiveness at Flea Control.

“A comparison study of Frontline Plus versus K-9 Advantix showed at 28 days K-9 Advantix lost about 50% of it’s efficiency at killing fleas versus a 5% efficiency loss in Frontline Plus. In this study dogs were treated with one of these products. The dogs were then exposed to 100 live unfed fleas on days 6, 13, 20 and 27. Flea counts were taken on the dogs on days 7, 14, 21 and 28. Frontline Plus maintained a flea killing efficiency of over 95% during the study period. K-9 Advantix dropped to 70% by day 14!!!! and to 50% by day 28!!!”

Bottom line, these two topical products seem to be very close on many points making a product decision as to which is best at Flea Control for your pup very thought provoking.

I chose Frontline Plus for my pup Dixie because of its apparent staying power. I also found out that fleas do NOT have to bite your pup for Frontline Brand Products to work. Frontline Brand Products kill fleas if they simply come into contact with your pup’s hair coat.
